Some digital marketing terms you should know

Post by sakib40 »

Digital marketing evolves daily with new advertising formats, techniques, strategies, and technologies in such rapid succession that, in most cases, there's barely time to even adapt the terminology. The result: a "salad" of Anglicisms that's difficult to digest for most users.

Here's a (non-exhaustive) compilation of some of the most common terms... and their explanation for laymen.

Above the fold . The part of a web page that is visible on first touch, without scrolling . Used to indicate whether an ad is displayed on a web page without scrolling.
Ad Blocker. Software in a user's browser that prevents special lead ads from being displayed on screen. According to a study published by Adobe and Page-Fair, the rise of ad blockers has cost the online advertising industry $22 billion globally in 2015. Approximately 200 million users worldwide use ad blockers.
Ad Exchange. A virtual space where advertising contracts are negotiated by connecting sellers (web publishers, websites, ad networks) and buyers (advertisers, advertising agencies) through an automated management system. The Ad Exchange platform manages supply and demand, charging a commission for doing so.
Bluecasting. A system that allows audio, video, or text content to be sent to users via Bluetooth technology, used in direct marketing activities.
Bluejacking: Sending a message from a mobile phone or transmitter to another mobile phone within close range via Bluetooth technology.
Cash-back. A type of affiliate marketing in which an affiliate website shares a percentage of its commissions with users. Users feel that the product purchased through cash-back is cheaper since they receive compensation and/or a discount on the final price. In some cases, they are compensated directly with the money generated, and in other cases, they allocate points or virtual money that can be converted into gifts.
