British Airways cancels flights due to major IT fault
Steve Ranger | 05/29/2017
On May 27, British Airways was forced to cancel all its flights from London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports due to a "major IT systems failure."

severely disrupted its flight schedules around the world, although it said the problems were not caused by a cyberattack but by a power supply issue.

The airline initially cancelled all flights from spain whatsapp data and Gatwick until 6pm UK time on Saturday 27 May. But it later said it had "regrettably" had to cancel all flights from those airports until midnight.

"We are working hard to accommodate our customers who were scheduled to fly today on the next available flights this weekend. Those who are unable to fly will be offered a full refund," the company said on Facebook.

The system failures also affected its call centres and website, the airline said.

Speaking in a video posted on Twitter from the airline's operations centre near Heathrow, British Airways chief executive Alex Cruz said the outage had affected check-in and operational systems and that IT staff were working "tirelessly" to fix the issues. "We believe the root cause was a power supply issue and there is no evidence of a cyber-attack," he added.

British Airways' IT problems coincide with the start of the school holidays at a number of schools.

"We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience this is causing our customers and are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible," the company said on Facebook. On Twitter, the company described the problems as a "global outage" and said it had been unable to update its website due to technical difficulties.
