In a conveyor line, where a small set of tools is sufficient, a worker in a repair shop must have a full arsenal. In departments with variable tasks, it is impractical to limit the workspace to strict standards.

In an unpredictable environment, work places often look confusing and untidy. The worker never knows what tool he will need tomorrow, so he often saves everything he has ever used. In the process of work, he has to create non-standard tools and store them as well.

In organizations with “improvisational management,” employees prefer to hide scarce items. In such an environment, management evaluates them based on their ability to solve problems on the fly. Those who have hidden reserves are respected. This can lead to a lack of sharing of knowledge and skills. If you do not want this to flourish, evaluate employees by other criteria and organize a centralized and visualized storage.
