President Berg: “Legal regulations are trapped in the world of assembly lines, time clocks and piecework”

Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil presented the “Council of the World of Work” today. Bitkom President Achim Berg explains:

"The 'Council of the World of Work ' has a lot of work ahead of it. It is about preparing the right decisions quickly. Digitalisation raises very fundamental questions, and there are already many suggested answers to them. Our world of work has changed a lot, but the legal regulations are trapped in the world of assembly lines, time clocks and piecework.

Many companies are reacting to this and are driving internal cultural change. What they need is not more regulations, but more space to breathe and try things out.

The digital world of work needs more flexibility and self-determination. The completely outdated working time regulations with eleven-hour rest periods must finally be modernized. The daily maximum working time should be replaced by a weekly maximum. The outdated rules on workplaces need to be fundamentally redesigned.

And tax law should be changed so that employees involved in startups are no longer taxed more heavily than founders in order to encourage participation and innovation.

We wish the Advisory Board a speedy conclusion to its deliberations, the greatest possible success in finding the right answers and then the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs an equally rapid implementation of the need for action before the end of the current legislative period.”
