At the 2023 Indian Mobile Congress, Reliance Jio unveiled a satellite gigabit internet service called SpaceFiber. The project aims to connect remote areas of India where internet access services were previously unavailable. Many experts have already put Jio SpaceFiber on par with Elon Musk's Starlink satellite telecommunications service.
, a provider of state-of-the-art afghanistan whatsapp resource satellite technology in the medium Earth orbit (MEO). MEO is the region of space around the Earth with an altitude of 2,000 km to 35,786 km above sea level. This orbit contains navigation, communication, Earth exploration and space satellites. MEO is home to GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and O3b satellites. The orbital periods of MEO satellites range from 2 to 24 hours.
According to Jio, the SES constellation is the only satellite constellation that can deliver gigabit “fiber services from space.” The partnership began in 2022 when Jio announced a joint venture, Jio Space Technology Limited, with SES to provide satellite broadband services in India. The partnership gave Jio access to SES’s O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites.
SES was the first company in the world to not only launch but also commercialize dual-orbit communications satellites. The company has launched more than 70 satellites into geostationary orbit (GEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing TV and data services to millions of customers worldwide. In addition to Jio, SES has partnerships with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Honeywell, Hughes Network Systems, and SpaceX.
Jio has received approval from the Indian Ministry of Telecom to launch its gigabit broadband service. Jio has currently selected “four of the most remote locations in India” to demonstrate SpaceFiber’s capabilities. The company says the rollout of the new service will help support “additional mobile backhaul capacity” and improve the availability and scalability of Jio True5G cellular coverage in the most remote parts of the country.
Jio already provides telecom services in India through Jio Fiber and AirFiber. Jio Fiber is a fixed broadband wired connection technology, while AirFiber is a fixed wireless access system. In contrast, SpaceFiber uses a direct connection to satellite (specifically SES O3b and O3b mPOWER), so in remote areas only a small amount of ground infrastructure setup is required, making it much easier to provide internet services.
