Create a powerful email subject line

One of the biggest follow-up mistakes sales professionals make? Not clearly defining the next steps in the process with the prospect.

For example, if the prospect says they need time to discuss your offering with your team, agree to follow up a week or two later. If you’ve conducted a successful product demo and they’ve expressed interest, schedule another call soon to follow up.

Be as specific as possible . “I’ll call you next week” is vague. “I’ll call you Wednesday, how about 9:30?” is more appropriate!

If you’re following up via email, your subject line can make betting email list or break the success of your follow-up . As mentioned, executives and decision-makers have hundreds, if not thousands, of emails in their inbox at any given time. So you need to grab their attention enough to make them want to open your email in the first place!

A generic subject line won’t cut it, as they’re easy to ignore or send straight to the trash folder. Instead, you’ll need to create something compelling that makes them want to know what you have to say.

Here are some other best practices for creating a powerful follow-up subject line:

keep your tone short, direct and conversational;
create a sense of urgency. This could include a specific time, or a limited-time offer;
ask a direct question, for example “can you help me?” or “what do you think about…” to motivate the recipient to open the email and respond;
Make it clear that the email contains valuable content. A subject line like “I saw this video and thought of you” or “I thought this article might be helpful to you” demonstrates value.

6. Be brief
As you already know, your prospects are busy people. They don’t have time for back-and-forth emails, long phone calls, or endless meetings. Instead, get straight to the point and keep your follow-ups short and to the point .

An email follow-up should be no more than about six lines in total length. And a follow-up phone call should generally be no longer than ten minutes .
