With so many ways to present any set of numbers, we’ve succeeded in making data visualizations in Fractl as complex as they need to be while always aiming for a nexus of simplicity and beauty. In other words: take raw numbers that people find interesting, think of a way to focus them so they’re clearly visible, and then create designs that fit the overall sentiment of the piece.
In a campaign for Porch.com , we asked 1,000 Americans a series of questions about food, focusing on things that would spark lighthearted and humorous conversation. For example, “Is a hot bosnia and herzegovina number data a sandwich?” and “What do you put on a hot dog?” As a Chicago native who believes there’s only one way to make a hot dog , this is exactly the kind of discussion that will make me take notice and share the content with friends on social media.
In response to these two questions,
Using Tableau Public, an open source data reporting solution that is one of the go-to tools for quickly building in Fractl, the above tables were converted into rough cuts of the final concept:
With the building blocks, we then gave our design team extensive notes on how to create something that was equally simple but much more engaging. Given the fun nature of this campaign, a more light-hearted design made sense, and our graphics team delivered. The entire campaign is a testament to the project manager’s innovative and expert ability to use simple numbers in a way that is beautiful, accessible, and immediately compelling.
