A good customer report communicates data in an easy-to-read and understand format.

A great report goes a step further and tells the story of that data why you need this database over a period of time in relation to a goal. Have we achieved the goal or are we on track to achieve it? Why or why not?

The report should present the right data to answer these questions so that the client understands what is happening and is not overwhelmed. Clearly distinguishable graphs, charts, icons, and colors are a great way to visually tell a story at a glance. Finally, a great report should be able to speak for itself, without the need for an in-person meeting every step of the way.

I deal with both the reports that are sent to me and those that need to be delivered to the client. I think there is a bit of a difference.

From the client side:

In addition to making customers money, we also care about making them happy. As you know, good numbers don't always guarantee a customer, but bad numbers will always get you fired.

Customers don’t care much about metrics; most of them don’t understand them or cling to numbers that don’t impact their marketing goals.

Even if you are dealing with a great marketing manager, he will have to get approval for the budget from someone who does not know the difference between bounce rate and exit rate.

Here's why a great report for a client , in our perspective:

It has a half-page summary that includes what happened this month and why. Did our plan for last month work and what are our plans for the future?

Ideally, it will show the client how you directly influenced the end result .

It has to tell a story that continues every month and be consistent. We can't adjust our interpretation to make the numbers look good. So, we can't say one month, "Organic traffic is down, but leads are up and that's all that matters," and the next month, "Well, leads are down, but look at all this organic traffic."

It provides all the statistics to support the summary at the beginning.
