Internet Naming Co. announced that five new generic top-level domains will be launched privately on January 24, 2024: .DIY, .FOOD, .LIFESTYLE, .LIVING and .VANA. Open registration will be available to everyone on March 6, 2024.
As Domain Incite explains, .DIY is an acronym for do it yourself, and the domain will apparently be aimed at jack-of-all-trades; as for .VANA, Domain Incite says it will be related to blockchain technology.
"Users from Russia georgia whatsapp number database will be able to register domains through both foreign and Russian registrars. From January 24 to February 28, 2024, the Sunrise period will be in effect, during which registration applications will only be accepted from owners of registered trademarks. The cost of registration during this period is usually significantly higher than during the open registration period," said Georgy Kazarov, head of domain development and related services at RU-CENTER.
Andrey Vorobyov, director of the Coordination Center for .RU/.РФ domains, reported that the initial price for the "early access" period will be $25,000 and will decrease every day.
"There are 131 accredited registrars in Russia, and companies that find the new zones promising and in demand among users will begin working with them," noted Andrey Vorobyov.
According to him, there are currently no known restrictions on working with new zones for Russian registrars or on registering domains in them for Russian users.
Georgy Kazarov explained that the domain zones .DIY, .FOOD, .LIFESTYLE, .LIVING, .VANA existed earlier as brand domains (intended for use by brands and large companies), but were not used by Lifestyle Domain Holdings, and it was impossible to register domains in these zones.
"The cost of registration during the open period of domains in the zones .DIY, .FOOD, .LIFESTYLE, .LIVING on average corresponds to the level of prices for registration in other New gTLDs. The exception is domains in the zone .VANA - for them, the cost during the open registration period will be several thousand US dollars per domain name," said Georgy Kazarov.
According to him, there is no increased demand for these domain zones from the Russian audience, but one can expect active interest from Russian companies that work and provide services in the relevant industries: for example, the .FOOD domain zone will be of interest to participants in the restaurant industry or food producers.
Andrey Savelyev, CEO of Domains.RF LLC (Rf.ru), believes that new domain zones are a global speculation by the ICANN corporation: they bring ICANN profit, but for end consumers they are a farce.
"Any legal entity can open a new zone for about $2 million if it is available: ICANN reviews the application for some time and makes a decision. But there are risks associated with the use of these zones - for example, an unjustified increase in prices for renewing the use of this domain. From a marketing point of view, this is also not the best option. There is a rule - if the business is located in Russia, the most suitable domains are .RU, .РФ, .SU. If the business is international, then it is better to choose general zones: .COM, .PRO. Of course, there are several zones that registrars have a positive attitude to - .CLUB, .ART, and literally a dozen more zones out of a thousand that will be useful. The rest is a bubble and a scam for market participants. In addition, additional risks appear for Russian users - blocking both by Roskomnadzor and by companies from unfriendly countries. Moreover, these zones may turn out to be unprofitable and close," added Andrey Savelyev.
