In Macedonia, for example, a large-scale carnival is held in honor of the Old New Year, which is more than 1400 years old. This costumed holiday is held in honor of Saint Basil, who is revered in Orthodoxy. Thousands of Macedonians make scary masks and costumes from papier-mâché, rags and other improvised means and walk the streets singing carols, seeing off the old year and welcoming the new one.
